Discovering The Way To Self Realization

By Carolyn Olson

During their lifetime, every individual experiences many emotional phases, typically becoming engrossed in a particular state of mind. A sad feeling can bring on an influx of negative and depressing thoughts. The journey of self realization can help one find relief from such turmoil and achieve happiness and inner peace without disrupting their worldly responsibilities.

Beyond basic matters of cooking, earning, and raising children, it is important for one to consider the true goal of human life. The quest is to find internal and pure happiness through acts of finding love, peace, truth, beauty, and freedom. A huge part of this task is to realize one's own existence is valuable and that understanding and controlling emotions is a vital factor in the journey.

Human nature is to seek something that makes one happy when there is dissatisfaction within oneself. When each and every day is considered a gift, one seeks to replace that which is sad with something of a more positive nature. Unfortunately, this feeling of euphoria is eventually replaced again by a sense of unrest or negativity that starts the entire cycle once more, continuing without end.

Emotions involve a constant fluctuation of hormones which tend to cause unconscious mood swings and behavioral changes. Some may opt to repress such natural reactions by repressing them though that may result in one feeling stressed, depressed or experiencing extreme outburst such as sadness, anger, confusion or laughter. Management is more effective when one learns to understand why those feelings occur at all.

Many individuals feel that finding a way to accept themselves on a fully spiritual level will help them effectively confront the obstacles in their path with an objective calm. An average person may often reflect upon deep concerns like where everything began, why there is life at all, and just how they fit in the grand scheme that is the vast universe. The journey begins by letting go of the things that can not be answered and focusing on what is tangible now.

One must accept that there are things that are beyond the limited capabilities of human intellect and are left to the universe alone to understand. The five senses with which a person is endowed are meant only to process tangible aspects, materialistic matters in which one tends to become deeply consumed. True knowledge and freedom comes by not being concerned with what was, or what will be, but only with what is at this very moment in time.

Another important factor is understanding that balance comes from opposition. A person can never really know happiness unless they also experience deep sadness, and good can not exist without something bad to make it noticeable. Looking at opposites as equal parts of a whole can help one embrace each experience as a necessary part of life without giving in to emotional extremes.

There are different paths though which one may achieve an inner peace. These include chanting, worshiping, and meditating, all practices that help a person to focus their mind and center themselves inside. In this manner, a person can think more clearly on what makes them feel certain emotions, thus gaining the knowledge to control them calmly.
