Features To Look For When Buying CMS Pulse Oximeters

By Annabelle Holman

Claims made by producers of pulse oximeters make it hard to select the right gadget. This is usually the case especially if one is ignorant about the important features a good gadget should have. The information in this article should be able to help potential buyers in picking the right CMS pulse oximeters. All important features are highlighted although further research can be done to have more knowledge.

First, there are many reasons why it is useful to use a pulse oximetry device. One of the reasons is the immediacy with which one can check their heart rate and blood oxygen concentration. This is important especially during exercise or to pilots because normal brain functioning may be affected by changes in altitude and air pressure in some people. Patients with sleep apnea should also wear the device when going to sleep to determine the efficiency of CPAP therapy.

Checking for recording capability in a device should be the first thing. Devices with recording capability keep a record of values measured over time. Comparisons can therefore be done over a given time frame. An analysis of the recordings should tell when at night apnea activities occur. This is possible because, during apnea activities, oxygen levels in blood drop and heart rates increase.

The accuracy of values displayed by the device is also of great importance. Normally a certain error level is allowed in most readings. Low-end devices have the highest error margins hence caution should be exercised when buying them. Whatever the case an error margin of two percent should not be exceeded. Accuracy can be determined by comparing values from the gadget and those measured through other means.

One must also check the information shown and the kind of display it is displayed on. Normal LED displays are the commonest in low-end products. No other information besides heart beat and oxygen concentration are displayed by cheap devices. High quality commodities have superior displays that display extra information like menus, perfusion index value, battery level indicator, pulse waveform, and pulse meter apart from the 2 main parameters.

One should buy a product in which it is possible to set the threshold values for heart rate and O2 saturation percentage. Such capabilities also call for incorporation of an alarm system. Whenever the values fall below or rise above the threshold values, the user in alerted by the alarm. This way, the patient can be prevented from going into serious conditions like commas through taking of preventive measures. The alarms also indicate low battery levels.

The oximeter bought must have a warranty period. Warranties for these products are normally two years or more. When buying a high-end oximeter, avoid settling for those that the warranty does not exceed two years. Warranties provide protection against losses caused by the negligence of producers.

Oximeters that use rechargeable lithium ion batteries should not have been on the shelves for over a year at the time of purchase. This is because too much discharging in these kinds of batteries damages them. Choosing a product that can use both rechargeable and alkaline batteries is an added advantage.
