Various Types Of Anesthesia Procedures That Physicians Use During Surgery

By Krystal Branch

Advances in the medical field have seen surgical procedures to be painless contrary to what used to be the case some years back. There are many different types of anesthesia used in the health centers these days. Drugs for making treatment procedure painless are injected into the whole body or to a particular part of the body. These drugs make the make the area numb so that the patient will not have any sense of feeling as the procedure is undertaken.

It is used on both human and animal body. When it is injected, it immediately stops sensations in that small area or the whole body, depending on where it has been applied. These drugs make a patient to sleep during the whole process. After it is done, they will wake up but remember feeling no pain. The doctors select what to use depending on the area and the time the surgery is likely to take. They also check ones health history.

An example of these drugs used is the local anesthetic. It is administered to patients in a small part of their body where the surgical procedure is to be done. It is used when extracting a painful tooth by injecting it in the gums to kill the pain. These anesthetic options are used for outpatients needs and their effect lasts for a very little time. People who are experiencing this drug are always awake but some are given sedative if need be.

General anesthetic drugs are used on patients particularly if the surgery is anticipated to take longer. These drugs make patients to sleep heavily so that they do not feel any sensation or even know what is going on. These drugs work by stopping the memory of patients from functioning during the time surgical procedure is being carried out. They usually administered as IV whereby patient inhale them as gases. They are suitable for application in surgeries where a patient may end up in very uncomfortable state.

In some cases, the general anesthetics cause side effects to the persons health, but this can be managed. The complications as a result of these drugs will also depend on the person lifestyle, body condition, and type of medications to use, smoking and taking of alcohol or blood thinning chemicals. There are rare complications instances that have been seen when using them like lung, heart attacks and stroke. It is not common for patients to die after administration of these drugs.

The third category is the regional drugs. As the name suggests, these are applied to bigger areas that needs an operation and where the local anesthetic medicines will not function well. This is further subdivided into subsections. It can be administered in the area surrounding your nerves. In most cases, it is preferred in areas around your limbs and face.

For those who are to undergo abdomen operations and c-section, the spinal block is used in the injection process. However, these are known to cause headache and spinal aches. Some patients who have been injected face respiration depressions.

The doctor should recommend the types of anesthesia which they know will work well and have little side effects on the patient. It is important to understand that the body reacts to them differently. Others will experience it in ways like feeling fatigue and others will lose their memory shortly.
