Multivitamins And Healthy Life Choices

By Doug Keeney

A body requires a certain amount of nutrients in order to function at its best. Much of this can be obtained through proper dietary care, though that is not always possible for some. That is why multivitamins are so important.

Ideally, a person would receive all of their required vitamins and minerals through the foods that they eat. A well balanced and healthy diet containing the required servings of fruits, vegetables, low-fat proteins and whole grains should be sufficient at providing for a body's needs. Unfortunately, very few people can actually eat properly all the time.

There are other factors that can actually work against even the healthiest of diets. Situations such as personal stress and pollutants in the air can block or deplete the absorption of some nutrients. One would need to carefully monitor their social and physical environments as carefully as their food intake in order to have everything perfect.

Being deficient in certain vitamins can be very detrimental. Even though the Western world rarely sees cases of diseases such as scurvy, pellagra and rickets, there are still health concerns like vision and heart problems, as well as cancer, that may be the direct result of insufficient nutrients. A serious lack in B-12 levels has been linked to various neurological disorders.

Taking a daily supplement can help a person supply their body with all the nutrients it needs on a regular basis. It is always recommended that one speak with their physician before beginning a regime just to be sure it will not conflict with prescribed medications. It is also important to remember that the requirements for a child's system is much different than an adults.

For the most part, multivitamins are a great way to replace nutrients that are missing from diet or that are depleted because of personal stress or environmental influences. A doctor should be consulted to make sure that taking supplements will not create an over abundance of anything because too much is as bad as too little. Available in several forms, liquid and softgels are easier to absorb than capsules or the harder packed tablets.
