Laser Training

By Tammara Odessa

An integral part of cosmetic health care now regularly includes laser training. Laser treatments are utilized in a number of different areas, including skin care, eye surgery, and most commonly, hair removal. This article will provide an overview of the training involved regarding laser treatments for skin care and hair removal.

Most Popular Laser Treatment Devices

Before discussing how laser procedures are performed, it is important to be aware that there are many devices out on the market that can be used for this treatment. Palomar lasers have an excellent reputation. By most industry experts, they are considered the industry standard.

Advice on Laser Training

In order to operate laser devices, specific training is required. Regardless of the procedure, this training is a necessity.

An Overview of the Principles

Laser therapy for hair removal operates on the principle that specific wavelengths of light which pulsate at a specific frequency are directed towards the base of the hair follicle (in hair removal) and different layers of the skin (in skin rejuvenation). This light of the laser is targeted at the hair follicle, which absorbs the heat. This heat produces the change required in the skin and removes the hair from the area. One of they key advantages of lasers is their ability to target a very specific area without impacting other areas. It is therefore extremely useful in managing localised hair or skin problems.

What about the Equipment?

There are a number of devices that are available to administer laser therapy. The devices that are used for both skin rejuvenation and laser hair removal are similar though their mechanism of action is slightly different.

A CO2 laser or a YAG laser are used for photorejuvenation. In other words, common skin rejuvenation. These devices emit intense pulsed light. This is absorbed by the melanin under the skin in areas where it is applied. This generates heat which destroys the excess pigment that may be present.

Hair removal uses a process called 'selective photothermolysis'. In this case, intense pulsed light is directed towards the root of the hair follicle. The different kinds of melanin within the root of the hair follicle are destroyed. As a result, hair will stop from growing again.

Are There Side Effects?

Laser treatment is usually painless and side-effects are very few. Though this may vary from patient to patient, treatments are effective for a good length of time. One of the more common side-effects is mild skin redness. This should obviously be explained to the patient prior to the procedure. Preliminary tests can often determine any chances of developing problems.
