Building Muscle - The Benefits of Doing Push Ups



Doing push ups is beneficial if you want a well toned chest and deltoid muscles. The exercise isolates four main muscles groups: The triceps, deltoids, pectorals and abdominal muscles. Doing push ups is also safer than working with free weights as you do not require the assistance of a spotter. Plus, if you want to burn out on push ups you can do so safely.
Let's start with what a push up is. Start from a kneeling position. Position both hands about shoulder length a part from each other; being careful that the surface of the floor is free from hazards such as pins and sharp glass. The surface where you do push ups should be flat and even and with no obstructions nor protrusions. Once you've positioned your hands on the floor properly, slowly position your legs behind you. Make sure your feet are together and that you do not move them around during the workout.
Gently straighten your knees so that your body is suspended between both your arms and legs. Make sure your whole body is straight; your midsection should not be bent nor hunched. Once you have achieved this stationary position go down until the tip of your nose touches the ground. Hold this position so that you can get a feel of how to lunge down and up properly with your arms.
Set your goal for ten repetitions at three sets. Doing push ups is a strength building exercise which means you get better the more times you do them. Your technique will also improve over time. The rule here is to never stop your routine. Doing push ups every other day for several weeks to months, you'll begin to notice an immediate improvement in your ability and strength development.
After you have mastered push ups you can then move to free weights and bench press machines in order to work with a wider range of muscle groups. Having good muscle development from doing push ups prepares all of the proper muscle necessary to do most forms of training that require good upper body strength.
Perhaps the only real challenge is self-discipline and being able to deal with the sore muscle pain you are going to feel afterwards. After your muscles adjust to strenuous physical activity the pain will subside and you will not experience so much pain later on. Just remember, a good routine is essential.
